President Barzani Receives Dutch Ambassador | |
Salahadin, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, ( President Masoud Barzani received a Dutch diplomatic delegation headed by Jan Waltmans, the ambassador of the Netherlands to Iraq. President Barzani and ambassador Waltmans spoke of the latest developments in the ongoing operations against the terrorists of the Islamic State, the issue of the Kurdistan independence referendum and the bilateral relations between Baghdad and Erbil.

The President expressed his appreciation to the allies who have been providing support to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region during the war on the terrorists of the Islamic State. He also stated that the Mosul operation is in its completion stages and added that it is imperative for there to be a solid plan for the post-liberation phase of Mosul.

President Barzani and ambassador Waltmans also discussed the scheduled referendum for independence in the Kurdistan Region in September. President Barzani reiterated his position that such step, aside from being a natural right of the people of the Kurdistan Region, it shall also pave the way for the next stages which shall be done through dialogue with others, particularly Baghdad.

The two sides also spoke of the relations between the federal government in Baghdad and the Regional Government in Erbil. The ambassador commended the Iraqi and the Peshmerga forces for their excellent coordination during the operations against the terrorists of the Islamic State, particularly the Mosul operation. All future negotiations with Baghdad, President Barzani stated, should be at that level of cooperation.
