President Barzani Receives a U.S. Government Delegation | |
Salahadin, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, ( President Masoud Barzani received a United States government delegation headed by Brett McGurk, the Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS. President Barzani and Mr. McGurk discussed several important issues including the Mosul operation, the operations against the terrorists of the Islamic State in Syria and the issue of the Kurdistan independence referendum.

The President and Mr. McGurk spoke of the latest development of the Mosul operation and how the complete liberation of the city of Mosul is mere few days away. Mr. McGurk commended the Iraqi and the Peshmerga forces for their coordination with the coalition and used the opportunity to express his condolences to the families and loved ones of the Peshmerga and Iraqi forces who were killed during the operation.

Mr. McGurk also briefed President Barzani on the Raqqah operation and the progress that has been made there. He added that the Coalition is grateful for the assistance that has been provided by President Barzani insofar as the passage between Iraq and Syria is concerned.

President Barzani and the U.S. delegation also spoke of the Kurdistan independence referendum which is scheduled to take place on September 25 of this year. It is essential, President Barzani stated that this step is taken and that the Kurdistan Region plans to take this and other further steps through dialogue with all of the concerned parties, most particularly Baghdad.
