President Masoud Barzani Meets US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford | |

Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani met with the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Joseph Dunford, and the US Ambassador to Iraq, Steward Jones in Erbil today. In a meeting between the two, they discussed preparations for the liberation of Mosul, US assistance to Peshmerga forces, and the political crisis in Baghdad.

General Dunford praised the leadership of President Barzani and the role of peshmerga forces in the recent military successes against the ISIS terrorists, and he reiterated Unites States continued commitment to assist the peshmerga forces in this fight. He also underlined the importance of peshmerga participation in the liberation of the city of Mosul, adding that the operation would not be successful without peshmerga participation.

President Barzani thanked President Obama and the US government for their decision to provide financial assistance to the peshmerga forces, and added that the peshmerga forces are well prepared in take an active role in the operation to liberate Mosul.

The US delegation concurred with President Barzani that there must be a clear understanding among the representatives of different communities in Mosul about the running of the city after its liberation. The two sides also discussed the importance of close cooperation and coordination among the peshmerga, the Iraqi forces, and the international coalition forces.
The US Ambassador commended the Kurdish members of Iraqi parliament for the positive role they have played during the recent political crisis in Baghdad.
