President Barzani Receives a United States Military Delegation | |
Salahadin, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, ( President Masoud Barzani received a United States military and diplomatic delegation headed by General Joseph Votel, the Commander of the United States Central Command. President Barzani and General Votel spoke of a number of salient issues facing the Kurdistan Region, Iraq and beyond, starting with the ongoing operations against the terrorists of the Islamic State. General Votel commended President Barzani and the Peshmerga forces for their very crucial role in the liberation of Mosul.

The meeting was attended by a number of military officials from the Kurdistan Region and the United States.

President Barzani expressed his gratitude to the United States-led coalition for their support to the Kurdistan Region during these very difficult times.

The two sides also spoke of the Kurdistan referendum for Independence. General Votel reiterated the position of the United States and that the process should be delayed. The General added that the referendum may have a negative impact on the operations against the terrorists of the Islamic State. President Barzani reassured General Votel that the Kurdistan region with its Peshmerga forces will continue to partake in the collective global effort against the terrorists of the Islamic State, adding that the referendum issue will not have any negative effects on the ongoing war.

The two sides also made reference to the Kurdistan Region delegation which is currently in Baghdad, negotiating some of the outstanding issues between Erbil and the Federal government.
