President Barzani Receives a Kurdish Delegation from the Former Soviet Union

Salahadin, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, (Krp.org)- President Masoud Barzani received a delegation of several Kurdish personalities from the former USSR. The delegates collectively work under a common federation of Kurdish communities in the countries which previously made up the Soviet Union. The delegates expressed their willingness to continue to support the people of the Kurdistan Region and made references to the historical ties between the Kurdish communities of the former Soviet Union and the Kurdistan Region, particularly after the exile of Mustafa Barzani in the late 1940s.

The delegates also stated that the role of the Peshmerga forces in the ongoing war against the terrorists of the Islamic State has further highlighted the Kurdish communities in the Diaspora. They expressed their condolences to the families of those who have perished in defense of the people of the Kurdistan Region against the terrorists of the Islamic State.

On his part, President Barzani welcomed the delegation and stated that the Kurdish communities in the former Soviet Union have always demonstrated their support to Kurdistan. The President made reference to the importance of the preservation of identity and added that the Kurds in the former Soviet Union have done an excellent job at that.

The President took advantage of the opportunity to share his thoughts on some of the recent events in the Kurdistan Region and added that the issue of conducting a referendum for independence is of great significance to the people and government of the Kurdistan Region.
