President Barzani Receives a United States Embassy Delegation | |
Salahadin, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, ( President Masoud Barzani received a U.S. diplomatic delegation headed by Douglas Silliman, the ambassador of the U.S. to Iraq. During the meeting, President Barzani and ambassador Silliman spoke of a number of issues including the Mosul operation, the IDP issue, and the Kurdistan independence referendum.

President Barzani and ambassador Silliman discussed the latest developments of the Mosul operation. The President emphasized on what he referred to as "the day after" and the importance of planning for post-liberation, which he stated is of great significance. Ambassador Silliman commended the Peshmerga and Iraqi forces for their collective roles in liberating the city of Mosul and paid his condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the ongoing war against the terrorists of the Islamic State.

The ambassador also commended President Barzani and the Kurdistan Region for continuing to harbor hundreds of thousands of IDPs from across Iraq.

The two sides also discussed the Kurdistan independence referendum which is scheduled for September 25 of this year. The President stated that all steps taken after the referendum will be through dialogue with the concerned parties, particularly Baghdad.
